Artist Statement; Wendy-Jane Sheppard

I create art that reflects my interest in the interconnections and relationships between humans and the other animal species with whom we share this planet. My art is also reflective of my concern of the deliberate demise of so many animals and the destruction of their habitat by people throughout the world.

I am also very interested in the physical characteristics and the different and unique personalities of individuals. My intrigue and curiosity of the nature of individual people and animals are most evident in my portraiture, which I enjoy painting very much. My detailed and accurate style of portraiture requires many hours of carefully examining the sitter and determining his or her personality and physical characteristics that will assist me in portraying the sitter in a manner that is reflective of their unique and individual character.

My preferred medium of choice is oil on canvas, employing a traditional classic oil painting technique.  I am inspired by the master painters of the 18th and 19th century and in particular the famous painter of the horse, George Stubbs (1724-1806) and equally masterful painter of all animals Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) I also admire the paintings of Australian expatriate Jeffery Smart (1921- ).

I also enjoy working in a variety of other mediums including charcoal, graphite, pastel, printmaking, mixed medium, as well as watercolour and acrylic.

‘Art for me is a lifelong and enduring dedication to a commanding visual language that expresses my unique and personal view of the world’.
